How do you rock your camera if the thing that you take the most photos on is your cell phone?

You start with knowing a little about how a camera actually works. You learn that the only thing a camera sees is light and how the camera controls that light is through aperture and shutter speed.

You learn that with even with your cell phone camera you can manipulate the composition of a photo and turn a dull shot into an expression of art.

Sarah Murdoch is a masterful photographer and our guide to taking better photos and rocking our cameras at our gro CRAFT September session. Starting with the quote that “the best camera is the one you have with you,” she took us through a session on lighting, composition and encouragement.

Using a furry stuffed animal as a subject, we wandered around the room taking photos with point of view, rule of thirds, symmetry, leading line and shape/pattern/colour/texture in mind. Not only did new angles and perspectives emerge, but a new and fresh way to look through the lens and capture memories.

Thank you lovely ladies who attended last night’s session in the midst of busy September schedules. We love seeing you all and we’d love to see your photos as you experiment with your newly learned techniques. If you’re up for sharing, please tag us @getgroing on Instagram and Facebook.
